How it works

How we handle MBE Certification, end-to-end.

MBE (Minority Business Enterprise) certification opens access to Fortune 500 supplier diversity programs (most large corporations have annual MBE spending targets) and state and local government contracts that have MBE set-asides.

1

Cert body selection

We identify which certifications match your customers: NMSDC for Fortune 500 supplier diversity programs, state and local minority business agencies for state contracts, individual corporate programs for specific buyers.

2

Ownership and control documentation

51%+ unconditional ownership by US minority citizens (Black, Hispanic, Asian Pacific, Subcontinent Asian, Native American). Plus control of day-to-day operations. Same standards across most cert bodies.

3

Site visit + interview

Most cert bodies require an on-site visit or video interview to confirm the business is operating, the owner controls it, and supporting documents are accurate. We prep you for the visit.

4

Submission + tracking

Application submitted to each cert body. NMSDC and state programs each have their own review timeline (60-120 days). We track all applications and respond to examiner questions.

FAQ

About the MBE Certification Service.

Who qualifies as a minority for MBE?
Cert bodies generally recognize: African American, Hispanic American, Asian Pacific American, Subcontinent Asian American, and Native American. Specific definitions vary by cert body (NMSDC has its own list; states may differ).
Is NMSDC the same as state MBE certification?
No. NMSDC is a private nonprofit that certifies for corporate supplier diversity programs. State MBE certification is done by state minority business agencies and is required for state contracts. Most businesses targeting both need both.
How long does MBE certification take?
60-120 days for most cert bodies. NMSDC is the slowest (often 90-120 days due to required site visit and committee review). State programs vary from 30-90 days.
What is the difference between MBE and DBE?
MBE: minority ownership and control, used for corporate supplier diversity and state contracts. DBE: disadvantaged business enterprise (socially and economically disadvantaged), used for DOT-funded contracts (federal). Different programs, different cert bodies.
Can I be MBE and 8(a)?
Yes if you qualify for both. MBE focuses on minority status. 8(a) requires social and economic disadvantage. Many minority business owners qualify for both. Each is a separate certification through a different agency.
What is the corporate supplier diversity spending?
Most Fortune 500 companies have annual targets for spending with minority-owned businesses. Walmart, Toyota, AT&T, JPMorgan Chase, and many others spend billions per year with NMSDC-certified MBEs. NMSDC certification is the entry credential.
