Sales Tax · Run

Know every state where you owe sales tax before the state does.

Sell into enough states and you cross "economic nexus" without noticing, and the bill accrues quietly with penalties until a state finds you first. File.Business watches your sales against every state's threshold, registers you where you have crossed, and files the returns that follow.

Why it exists

The tax you didn't know you owed is the worst kind.

Since 2018, you no longer need an office or a warehouse in a state to owe it sales tax. Selling enough into a state, often around $100,000 or 200 transactions in a year, creates "economic nexus" all on its own. Most growing businesses cross that line in several states without ever noticing.

What makes it dangerous is that nothing stops you. You keep selling, no one flags it, and the obligation quietly accrues. When a state eventually finds you, it can assess the tax you should have collected going back to the day you crossed, plus penalties and interest, and because you never charged your customers, it comes straight out of the business.

Sales Tax turns that blind spot into a dashboard. We measure your sales against every state's rule, register you for a permit wherever you have crossed, add the resulting returns to your compliance calendar, and watch the states you are approaching so the next crossing is caught the moment it happens.

How it works

Measure, register, file, monitor.

One loop that keeps you compliant in the states that matter, without registering everywhere you don't owe.

01Measure your nexusYour sales are scored against every state's physical and economic thresholds.
02Register where you oweWe file for a sales-tax permit in each state where you have actually crossed the line.
03File the returnsEach permit's return is added to your calendar and filed on the state's schedule.
04Monitor what's nextStates you are approaching are watched, so the next crossing never sneaks up on you.

FAQ

Sales tax, answered.

What is sales-tax nexus?
Nexus is the connection to a state that requires you to register for, collect, and remit its sales tax. It comes in two forms: physical nexus from an office, warehouse, inventory, or employee in the state, and economic nexus from selling enough into the state even with no physical presence. We check both for every state you sell into.
What are the thresholds?
They vary by state. A common threshold is around $100,000 in sales or 200 transactions in a year, while several large states set theirs closer to $500,000, and some count only sales rather than transactions. Physical presence, like an employee or a warehouse, can create nexus with no dollar threshold at all, which is why we track both rules per state.
What happens if I don't register?
The obligation doesn't go away, it accrues. A state can assess the tax you should have collected back to the date you crossed nexus, plus penalties and interest, and because you never charged customers it comes out of the business. It also surfaces as a liability in due diligence, which can complicate a raise or a sale, so catching it early is far cheaper than being found.
Does a marketplace like Amazon handle it for me?
Partly. Marketplace facilitator laws require platforms like Amazon to collect and remit tax on sales made through them, which covers those sales. But your direct sales, through your own site or other channels, are still yours to handle, and they count toward nexus. We track the direct side so the gap the marketplace doesn't cover doesn't become your liability.
How do you know when I'm about to cross a threshold?
Your sales are measured continuously against each state's rolling threshold, so a state moves from "clear" to "approaching" well before you cross. That gives you time to prepare to register and start collecting on the day you owe, rather than discovering the line months after you passed it. The approaching states are the ones worth watching, and we watch them for you.
What comes after registering?
Each permit brings a return you have to file on the state's schedule, monthly, quarterly, or annually depending on volume. We add every return to your compliance calendar so a registration doesn't turn into a missed filing, and file them for you. A nexus crossing often signals other obligations too, which we flag as they come up.
Can File.Business handle it all?
Yes. We review your sales against every state's nexus rules, register you for a permit where you've crossed, add the return schedule to your calendar and file them, and monitor the states you're approaching so the next crossing is caught automatically. The result is a sales-tax position you can actually see, instead of a liability building in the background.
