People & Payroll · Run

Pay your team in a click, filings included.

Payroll goes wrong in the gap between calculating and filing: a missed deposit, an unregistered state for a remote hire, a late 941. File.Business runs payroll, deposits the taxes, files the returns, and handles new-hire registrations, so paying people never quietly puts you out of compliance.

This is a real payroll cycle across four states. Hit run: net pay is calculated, deposits go out, and every federal and state filing behind it is queued automatically.

Why it exists

The danger isn't the math. It's the filing.

Any tool can calculate a paycheck. The trouble starts after: the withholding has to be deposited on a federal schedule, the quarterly 941 and annual 940 have to be filed, and every state where you have an employee wants its own registration and returns. Miss one and the penalty notices arrive months later, long after the run felt "done."

Remote hiring makes it worse. The moment you pay someone in a new state, you've created a filing obligation there, often before you realize it. Founders discover this when a state sends a bill for an account they never opened, for an employee they hired in good faith.

People & Payroll closes that gap. It calculates, deposits, and files, federal and state, and handles the new-state registrations that a remote hire triggers. Wages and taxes post straight to your books, and equity comp ties into your cap table, so one hire is entered once and reflected everywhere.

How it works

Onboard once. Then it runs itself.

Setup collects what each hire and state needs; from there, every cycle is an approval, not a project.

01Onboard the hireW-4, I-9, and direct deposit collected, plus the new-hire report every state requires.
02Register the stateIf it's a new state for you, the tax registrations are opened as part of onboarding, no surprise bills later.
03Run & approvePick a schedule; each run takes minutes because rates and withholding are already in place.
04Deposits & filings go outDirect deposits, tax deposits, and the 941/940/W-2 filings are handled on time, automatically.

FAQ

People & payroll, answered.

Does it file my payroll taxes, or just calculate them?
It files them. Withholding is calculated and deposited, and the returns behind it, your quarterly Form 941, annual 940, and year-end W-2s, are filed on time. Calculating without filing is exactly where most payroll trouble starts, which is why filing is the point, not an add-on.
Can it handle employees in different states?
Yes. Hiring in a new state creates new registrations and filings, and we handle them, so a remote hire doesn't quietly put you out of compliance somewhere you didn't realize you had an obligation. The state registrations are opened as part of onboarding, before the first paycheck rather than after a penalty notice.
What if I only pay contractors?
Then you may not need full payroll, just a 1099-NEC for each contractor at year-end, which we can handle. If a worker is really an employee, though, they belong on payroll, and we help you classify correctly, because misclassification is one of the more expensive mistakes a growing company makes.
Do you handle benefits and equity too?
Yes, as you grow. Benefits, new-hire compliance, compensation benchmarking, equity-grant tracking, and the 409A valuation you need to grant options are all part of the service, with a PEO option where it fits. Equity ties directly into your cap table, so grants and dilution stay in sync.
Does it handle new-hire onboarding and filings?
Yes. Adding an employee collects the W-4 and I-9 details, sets up direct deposit, and files the new-hire report each state requires, a step that's easy to miss and carries its own penalties. If the hire is in a state where you've never had an employee, the new state registrations are handled as part of onboarding.
How does it connect to my books and cap table?
Wages and payroll taxes flow into Books & Finance so your statements stay accurate without re-entry, and equity compensation ties into your cap table so grants and dilution stay in sync. Because payroll, books, and equity share one platform, the same hire doesn't have to be entered in three systems.
Do you offer a PEO or benefits administration?
Yes. Health, retirement, and HSA/FSA administration are available, and a PEO arrangement is an option when pooling benefits or offloading HR liability makes sense for your size. We help you decide whether a PEO actually fits or whether standard payroll plus benefits is the better setup, rather than pushing one by default.
