1

Eligibility review

We confirm: business owner is socially and economically disadvantaged, owner controls the business (at least 51% ownership), business has been in operation 2+ years, owner net worth under $1.32M (excluding business and primary residence).

FAQ

About the SBA 8(a) Certification Service.

Who qualifies for 8(a)?
Socially and economically disadvantaged business owners. Members of designated minority groups are presumed socially disadvantaged. Others must show by preponderance of evidence (history of discrimination affecting business or career). Economic disadvantage: personal net worth under $1.32M (excluding business and primary residence), $850K cap on adjusted gross income (last 3 years average), and assets under $6.5M.
How long does 8(a) certification take?
3-6 months from submission to decision. SBA examiner queue is the biggest variable. Applications submitted to incomplete records take longer; we minimize back-and-forth by submitting complete the first time.
What is the difference between 8(a) and other set-asides?
8(a) is the broadest socially-economically disadvantaged program with the highest sole-source threshold ($4.5M). HUBZone is geographic. WOSB is gender-based. VOSB and SDVOSB are veteran-status. MBE is state-level minority. Most disadvantaged owners qualify for multiple.
Can I have multiple federal certifications?
Yes. Owners commonly hold 8(a), WOSB, MBE, and HUBZone simultaneously if eligible. Each opens different contract pools. We handle each application separately; bundle pricing available.
What happens after 9 years?
You graduate. The program ends. You can no longer bid on 8(a) set-aside contracts or receive 8(a) sole-source awards. Most 8(a) graduates pivot to GSA Schedule, IDIQ contracts, or other set-asides (HUBZone, WOSB if applicable) for continued federal access.
What ongoing reporting does 8(a) require?
Annual review with SBA examiner (financial review, business plan update, capability statement). Continued reps and certs in SAM.gov. Specific reporting for any joint ventures or Mentor-Protégé arrangements. We provide year-1 support in Standard tier; ongoing in Premium.
