Form 990 service
Nonprofit annual return · auto-routed

Keep your nonprofit's tax exemption. Form 990, on time, every year.

Tax-exempt nonprofits must file Form 990 every year. The form depends on revenue: Form 990-N for under $50,000 in gross receipts, Form 990-EZ for $50,000 to $200,000, full Form 990 for $200,000+, and Form 990-PF for all private foundations regardless of revenue. Miss three consecutive years and the IRS automatically revokes your tax-exempt status. We auto-route to the right form, file with the IRS, and handle state charitable-solicitation renewals.

How it works

How we handle Form 990, end-to-end.

Tax-exempt nonprofits must file Form 990 every year.

1

Form selection

We auto-route based on the nonprofit's gross receipts and total assets: 990-N (under $50K receipts), 990-EZ ($50K-$200K receipts, under $500K assets), full 990 ($200K+ receipts or $500K+ assets), 990-PF (any private foundation).

2

Financial data collection

We pull data from your bookkeeping (QuickBooks, Aplos, Xero, manual entry) or accept a CSV upload. Includes revenue by source, program-service expenses, management expenses, fundraising expenses, and end-of-year balance sheet.

3

Schedule preparation

We prepare the required schedules: Schedule A (public charity status), Schedule B (donor list, redacted in public copy), Schedule O (narrative), Schedule G (fundraising and gaming) when applicable, and others.

4

E-file and state filings

We e-file with the IRS through MeF, receive acknowledgement within hours, and forward the PDF. State charitable-solicitation renewals (40+ states require them) are filed concurrently at your option.

FAQ

About the Form 990 Filing Service.

What is the Form 990 deadline?
The 15th day of the 5th month after the close of the tax year. For calendar-year nonprofits that is May 15. A 6-month automatic extension is available via Form 8868 (we file it free if you need it).
Which Form 990 should I file?
Form 990-N (e-Postcard) if gross receipts are normally under $50,000. Form 990-EZ if gross receipts are between $50,000 and $200,000 and total assets are under $500,000. Full Form 990 if gross receipts are $200,000+ or assets are $500,000+. Form 990-PF for all private foundations regardless of revenue.
What happens if I miss the Form 990 deadline?
Three consecutive years missed and the IRS automatically revokes your tax-exempt status (Pension Protection Act of 2006). Reinstating requires filing Form 1023 again ($600 IRS fee plus restored income tax for the revocation period). We track 990 deadlines as one of our highest-priority compliance items.
Do I have to file Form 990 if my nonprofit is small?
Yes. Even nonprofits with no revenue must file at least Form 990-N each year. The only exemptions are churches, government instrumentalities, and certain political organizations. All other 501(c) organizations file annually.
Is Form 990 public?
Yes. The public portion of Form 990 (everything except Schedule B donor information) is available through the IRS, Candid/GuideStar, ProPublica's Nonprofit Explorer, and any other organization that requests it. Treat the Form 990 as a public-relations document.
What is the 990-PF excise tax?
Private foundations owe a 1.39% excise tax on their net investment income (interest, dividends, capital gains, rents). It is paid quarterly through EFTPS and reconciled on Form 990-PF. We calculate and file.
