FAQ

About the Form 990 filler.

What does the $9 Blank tier include?
Yes. The blank Form 990 family PDFs are the official IRS forms; you can download them for $9. Form 990-N (e-Postcard) is also free directly from the IRS - the $39+ tiers add filled forms, vault storage, and automatic next-year reminders.
Which 990 variant do I file?
Based on gross receipts and total assets: 990-N (e-Postcard) if gross receipts ≤ $50,000; 990-EZ if gross receipts < $200,000 AND total assets < $500,000; full Form 990 if either threshold is exceeded; 990-PF if you're a private foundation regardless of size. Our filler picks the variant for you in Section 1.
When is Form 990 due?
By the 15th day of the 5th month after the end of your tax year. For calendar-year nonprofits that's May 15. You can request a 6-month extension by filing Form 8868 by the original due date.
What happens if I miss three years in a row?
Automatic loss of tax-exempt status under section 6033(j) of the Internal Revenue Code. The IRS publishes the Auto-Revocation List quarterly. Restoring exempt status requires re-applying via Form 1023 or 1024 - usually 6-12 months and $275-$600 in IRS fees plus several thousand in legal/prep work.
Can Form 990 be paper-filed?
No. The Form 990 family is MeF-only since tax year 2020. All variants must be e-filed. Our $99 Instant e-file tier submits directly through the IRS MeF system with same-second acknowledgement.
What if my nonprofit had no activity this year?
You still must file. If you had gross receipts under $50,000 and no other reporting triggers, you can file the 990-N e-Postcard - 8 fields and 5 minutes. Failing to file is what triggers the 3-year auto-revocation, even if you had zero activity.
Is my data saved?
Your inputs autosave to your browser (localStorage) so you can come back later. No data goes to our servers until you choose a paid tier and pay. EIN data is never transmitted in the free tier.
