Qualification is one filing with three moving parts and a threshold question in front of it. These four are what the state you are entering controls, and none of them are settled by your home state.
What counts as doing business
Every page in this section starts with the same question, and the answer is written by the state you are entering rather than the one you formed in. That line decides whether you register at all, and it is drawn locally, which is why there is a page for each state.
A certificate of good standing
The new state generally wants evidence that the state you formed in still recognizes the company. That is a certificate of good standing, issued by your home state and filed with the application. It is a short document, and a missing one holds up the whole registration.
A registered agent there
Registration comes with a registered agent in the state you are entering. Someone has to be reachable at an address inside that state for official mail once the company is on its register, and the agent is named on the application itself.
The form and the office
What the application asks for, which office receives it, and what travels alongside it are set locally. Each state page covers that state's version rather than a generic outline, including the order the pieces have to be assembled in.

The questions people ask before they register.
What is foreign qualification?
It is the filing that registers a business formed in one state to do business in another. Foreign here means out-of-state, not out-of-country. The company is not formed again; it is recognized by a second state and added to that state's register. Most states want a certificate of good standing from your home state and a registered agent inside their own borders before they grant it.
Does qualifying change where my LLC is formed?
No. Your formation state stays your formation state, and the law of that state still governs the company itself. Qualification adds authority to operate in a second state on top of that. You can hold registrations in several states at once, but there is only ever one home state unless you go through domestication, which is a different filing with a different purpose.
Do I need a certificate of good standing?
Usually. The state you are entering wants confirmation from the state that formed you, and the certificate is that confirmation. It says the company exists and is current on that state's register. It is ordered from your home state, not the new one, and it is filed with the application, so it is worth starting early since the application waits on it.
Do I need a registered agent in every state?
Each state you register in expects an agent with an address inside that state. The point is that there is a known place to deliver official mail to the company where it operates. That is separate from your home state agent, which stays where it is. Your state page covers the agent requirement for that state alongside the rest of the application.
How is this different from domestication?
Qualification adds a state. Domestication changes the one you already have. If you register in a second state, you keep the original formation state and answer to both. If you domesticate, the company's state of formation moves and the old registration is closed out. The choice depends on whether the business is expanding into a state or relocating to it.
How many states do I have to register in?
As many as have a trigger you meet. Each state writes its own definition of what counts as doing business inside its borders, and each decides for itself, so the answer is a state-by-state count rather than a single number. The page for each state sets out how that state frames the question, which is the practical way to work through a list.
