Do I need an employee handbook?
Not strictly required in most states (with exceptions like a Connecticut sexual-harassment policy for 3+ employees, Illinois at 15+). But strongly recommended once you have 5+ employees: handbook sets expectations, documents policies for litigation defense, and is the cornerstone of HR.
Does the handbook create a contract?
Generally no, but you must include a disclaimer that the handbook is not a contract and at-will employment continues. Without the disclaimer, courts have ruled the handbook creates implied-contract obligations the employer must honor. We include the disclaimer in the right places.
How often do I need to update it?
Major state labor laws change every legislative session. Federal changes are less frequent. Our Pro tier auto-updates as laws change. For Free users, plan to regenerate every 12 months at minimum.
What if I have employees in multiple states?

Do remote employees need state-specific addenda?
Yes, based on where they live and work, not where the company is headquartered. A remote employee in CA gets the CA addendum even if the company is in TX. This is a common gap.
What about union employees?
Union employees follow the collective bargaining agreement (CBA), which supersedes most handbook policies. We add a union section that notes the CBA controls for those employees. For mixed unionized and non-unionized workforces, the handbook applies to non-union employees.
