Enroll in E-Verify. Federal contractors + state mandates.

E-Verify is the DHS system that confirms US work eligibility by comparing I-9 information against federal records. Required for: federal contractors (FAR clause 52.222-54), employers in many states (AZ, AL, GA, MS, NC, SC, TN, UT and others), and voluntarily for any employer that wants enhanced verification. Once enrolled, you must run every new hire through E-Verify within 3 days of start.

FAQ

About the E-Verify Enrollment Service.

What is E-Verify?
E-Verify is a federal online system that lets employers confirm a new hire's authorization to work in the US by checking their information against government records, complementing the required Form I-9. Some states and federal contracts mandate it. We keep your employer setup organized so enrolling and using it is manageable.
Is E-Verify required?
It depends: E-Verify is voluntary for many employers but mandatory in certain states and for many federal contractors, so whether you must use it turns on your location and contracts. We flag whether your state or contracts require enrollment so you are not out of compliance.
How is E-Verify different from Form I-9?
Form I-9 is the mandatory paper verification every employer completes for each hire, while E-Verify is an electronic check against government databases that some employers must use in addition to the I-9. We flag both so your onboarding meets the applicable requirements.
How do I enroll in E-Verify?
You register your business with the federal E-Verify program, agree to its terms, and then submit new hires' information for verification after completing their I-9. We keep your employer registrations organized so enrollment fits cleanly into your hiring process.
When do I run an E-Verify check?
After the employee completes the Form I-9, typically within a few days of their start, since E-Verify builds on the I-9 information. Timing rules apply. We flag the sequence so your verification is done in the right window and order.
What if E-Verify returns a mismatch?
A tentative non-confirmation triggers a required process where the employee can contest and resolve it, and you must follow specific steps and not take adverse action prematurely. We flag the process so a mismatch is handled correctly rather than exposing you to a claim.
Does E-Verify replace the I-9?
No: you still complete and retain the Form I-9 for every employee, and E-Verify is an additional electronic check where required, so it supplements rather than replaces the I-9. We flag both obligations so neither is skipped.
Do federal contractors have to use E-Verify?
Often yes: many federal contracts include a clause requiring the contractor to use E-Verify for employees, so if you pursue government work it frequently applies. We flag it as part of preparing for federal contracting so enrollment is in place.
Can File.Business help with employment verification setup?
We keep your employer registrations and onboarding organized and flag the I-9, E-Verify, and new-hire-reporting requirements that apply based on your state and contracts, so hiring is compliant from your first employee.
