Form W-7 · CAA-certified

ITIN Application. For founders without an SSN.

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a 9-digit IRS-issued number for individuals who do not qualify for an SSN but have a US tax obligation - typically foreign founders of US entities (required as the responsible party on Form SS-4 for EIN), foreign owners of US property, dependents of US taxpayers, and treaty benefits claimants. We file Form W-7, authenticate your passport as a Certified Acceptance Agent (no need to mail your original to the IRS), submit to the IRS Austin Service Center, and track to issuance.

How it works

How we handle Conservation Easement, end-to-end.

A conservation easement is a permanent restriction on the use of land, typically donated to a qualified land trust to preserve the land's natural or open-space character.

1

Eligibility review

Land must have conservation value: scenic, ecological, historic, open-space, or recreational. We assess whether your land qualifies. Most rural and undeveloped properties do; urban properties rarely.

2

Land trust selection

Donation must be to a qualified land trust (501(c)(3)). We refer to local and national land trusts (Land Trust Alliance, The Nature Conservancy, regional trusts). They accept the easement and hold the restriction in perpetuity.

3

Engineering + appraisal

Engineering work documents the conservation value. Qualified appraisal determines diminished land value (the deduction amount). IRS scrutinizes appraisals; we use highly credentialed appraisers with conservation easement experience.

4

Legal documentation + closing

Easement document recorded with county recorder. Permanent restriction runs with the land. Donor receives appraisal-supported deduction. Coordination with attorney specializing in conservation easements.

FAQ

About the Conservation Easement Service.

Why do foreign founders need an ITIN?
Form SS-4 (EIN application) requires identification of a 'responsible party' with an SSN or ITIN. Without one, you cannot get an EIN, which means no bank account, no payroll, no tax-treaty benefits. ITIN is the path for founders without SSN. Bundle: ITIN first (4-6 weeks), then EIN (1-3 weeks).
Do I need to mail my passport to the IRS?
Not when we file as Certified Acceptance Agent (CAA). We authenticate your passport in-person or via verified video, attach a Certificate of Accuracy (Form W-7(COA)) to the application. The IRS accepts the certification instead of the original passport. Most clients prefer this - your passport stays with you.
How long does the IRS take?
Typically 4-6 weeks at the IRS Austin Service Center. Peak tax season (March-May) can extend to 8-10 weeks. Rejections (incomplete docs, errors) restart the clock - which is why proper CAA filing matters.
Does an ITIN authorize me to work in the US?
No. An ITIN is purely a TAX identification number, not an employment authorization. You still need work authorization (visa, green card) to work for a US employer. But as a foreign founder of a US entity, you do not need work authorization - you can be a non-resident owner.
What if my ITIN expires?
ITINs expire if unused in any tax return for 3 consecutive years, or if the IRS deactivated batches (issued before 2013). Renewal uses the same Form W-7 process. We track + renew before expiration for clients.
Can my dependents (spouse, children) get ITINs?
Yes - dependents of taxpayers filing a US return can apply (Box d on W-7). Required to claim them as dependents on Form 1040. Documentation requirements slightly different - passport still sufficient. Our family/multi-applicant tier covers up to 4.
