How it works

How we handle DEA Registration, end-to-end.

DEA registration is required for anyone handling controlled substances (Schedules I-V): physicians prescribing, pharmacies dispensing, researchers using, manufacturers producing, distributors moving.

1

Eligibility + state licensing

DEA requires active state license for the controlled substance activity (medical license for prescribers, pharmacy license for dispensers). We confirm state licensing is in place before applying.

2

Schedule designation

Determine which schedules you need: Schedule II (high abuse potential, including opioids), Schedule III-V (lower potential). Different security and recordkeeping requirements per schedule.

3

Form 224 application

DEA Form 224 (or 224a for second registration). Includes business details, schedule designation, security plan, controlled-substance experience. DEA reviews 30-60 days.

4

State coordination + renewals

Some states require additional state-level controlled substance registration (CSR). We coordinate. DEA renewal every 3 years; we track.

FAQ

About the DEA Registration Service.

Who needs DEA registration?
Anyone handling controlled substances (Schedule I-V): physicians prescribing, pharmacies dispensing, researchers using, manufacturers producing, distributors transporting. Different categories have different forms and fees.
What are the controlled substance schedules?
Schedule I: highest abuse potential, no medical use (heroin, LSD, marijuana federally). Schedule II: high potential, accepted medical use (opioids, ADHD meds, cocaine). Schedule III: moderate potential (codeine, ketamine). Schedule IV: low potential (Xanax, Valium). Schedule V: lowest (Lyrica, low-dose codeine cough).
How long does DEA registration take?
30-60 days for most practitioners. Manufacturers and distributors can take 6-12 months due to more extensive review. State coordination can add time.
What is a state CSR?
Controlled Substance Registration at the state level. Some states require both federal DEA and state CSR. We coordinate.
What about marijuana?
Marijuana remains federally Schedule I. DEA does not register state-legal marijuana businesses. State-licensed marijuana operations are subject to state regulation only (and federal enforcement risk).
What happens if I let registration lapse?
Suspension of authority to handle controlled substances. Cannot prescribe, dispense, or use until reinstated. Reinstatement requires new application or expedited renewal (depending on lapse duration). Critical to renew on time.
